International law firm Bird & Bird has leased two office floors in Sydney’s landmark MLC Centre as it continues to expand its Australian presence.
The move will provide Bird & Bird with additional floor space for its Australian business, which comprises over 90 personnel, including over 60 legal professionals.
Globally, Bird & Bird has 29 offices across Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North America, comprising over 1,300 lawyers.
Its Australian office undertakes national, cross-border and multi-jurisdictional work for some of the highest profile global and national corporations operating in a range of industry sectors including technology and communications, life sciences, energy and utilities, retail and consumer, media, entertainment and sport, aviation, automotive and financial services.
CBRE’’s Lukas Kaz and Chris Retallick represented Bird & Bird in the MLC Centre negotiations, which will provide the firm with two whole floors totaling 2,295sqm.
The 10-year lease deal was struck after a year-long search for new office accommodation to replace the 1,800sqm of space Bird & Bird presently occupies over 3 ½ floors in 68 Pitt Street.
"After over 30 years in our current office space, we have reached the point where a move to new premises is required. Our significant growth over the past few years has seen many new partners and their teams join Bird & Bird and being able to accommodate our expanding team, over two internally connected floors, in a prime office location, will be a real positive for us," explained Shane Barber, Bird & Bird's Managing Partner, Australia.
Positioned in the heart of Sydney's financial and cultural districts, the MLC Centre is jointly owned by The GPT Group and Dexus.
The 19 Martin Place tower comprises 67 levels of office space, with limited vacancies. Bird & Bird will occupy levels 21 and 22.
Mr Kaz said the recent repositioning of the MLC Centre and the tower’s core location had been key drawcards for Bird & Bird.
“The ability to secure two contiguous office floors in a core CBD location was very appealing, given the limited availability of prime office space in a tightening market,” Mr Kaz said, noting that the move would provide Bird & Bird with greater efficiencies as well as increased space.
