A historical property in South Perth with significant development potential is being offered to the market for the first time in 115 years.

Located in one of Perth’s oldest and most desirable riverside suburbs, the property includes a range of early 1900s buildings set on the southern extent of the site, historically used as a convent, church and accommodation services for the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

CBRE’s Derek Barlow and Aaron Desange have been appointed to manage the sale campaign of 16 York Street on behalf of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

With a substantial landholding of 8,751sqm, the site occupies half a city block and three street frontages totalling 286m, providing flexible accessibility and scope for a range of development designs and density options.

Mr Barlow said, “An opportunity of this nature, with tremendous development upside and situated in one of Perth’s most affluent and sought-after suburbs, is set to generate great interest from a range groups with interest in premium development or repurposing the truly impressive existing improvements, including conversion to retirement living, PBSA, co-living or healthcare uses.”

A portion of the buildings are heritage listed, with feature brickworks, triple brick construction, towering ceiling heights and striking archways delivering a unique depth of character for inclusion in any redevelopment or repurpose project.

Mr Desange added, “Premium residential development with an inner metro location will allow developers to deliver a class of product that will resonate not only with the active, affluent local market but also south-east Asian and international buyers attracted to an exclusive, established neighbourhood on the doorstep of the city.”

As one of Perth first suburbs, the City of South Perth is rich in heritage, while providing a host of amenity including the South Bank retail and entertainment precinct, Perth Zoo and immediate access to the Perth CBD across the Swan River which lines its shore.

The Expressions of Interest campaign closes March 25, 2026.
